No. 8 Marietta defeats Student Princes

Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team lost on the road, 96-75 at No. 8 Marietta College, on Saturday.  The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Student Princes, who fell to 5-8 overall, 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Tamal Watkins had a team-high 17 points and four assists to pace The Berg.  Seth Hohman added 12 points and Alex Arellano had 10 points in the loss.

The Pioneers cleaned up on the glass, outrebounding Heidelberg 44-27.

After staying step-for-step with the Pioneers through much of the first half, Heidelberg showed brief periods of scoring lapses which allowed Marietta to build out 42-33 lead at the break.

Even while staying in stride with the Pioneers, HU could not garner a lead for much of the period. Alex Arellano's opening 3-pointer gave the Student Princes a brief 3-2 lead, but from there, Marietta kept Heidelberg comfortably behind them for the remainder of the half.

Heidelberg closed to within five on several occasions early in the second half, including a 53-48 deficit after Dylan Woods knocked down a jumper with 13:56 remaining.  The Pioneers broke out on a 12-3 lead which essentially killed any momentum the Student Princes were holding on to.

The Pioneers would cruise to a 96-75 final.

Marietta was led by a 24-point effort by Christian James. James was one of four Pioneers in double figures.

Heidelberg will return home for two games this week. First, John Carroll will visit Seiberling Gymnasium on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip off before Muskingum comes to Tiffin on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip off. Heidelberg will be hosting their Winter Alumni Day on the 18th.
