OBERLIN, Ohio -- A second 1-0 shutout for
Ryan Newman and
Kyle Morton's first goal of the season was all the Heidelberg University men's soccer team needed to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Student Princes improved to 2-3-1, while Oberlin fell to 3-5 on the season.
The 1-0 win was Heidelberg's first win since September 4, when they knocked off Wooster by an identical scoreline.
In the 63rd minute, the Berg broke the deadlock. After a
Sigurd Ilestad shot attempt, the Oberlin goalkeeper and defender weren't decisive, allowing Morton through to capitalize on the loose ball. Morton slid the ball through Parker Whitcomb's legs for the go-ahead goal.
Looking to seal the game with the narrow 1-0 lead, the Berg pressed for an insurance tally with two golden late chances. In the 87th,
Jackson Janetski broke through on goal but pushed his shot attempt just wide of the right post. Then, in the 89th,
Bryce Zeleznik saw his chance come one-on-one with Whitcomb, but saw his two attempts stopped in quick succession.
The Berg held up with a resilient defense bolstered by
John Gall,
Spencer Tredwell, and
Kelly Itito, keeping Oberlin to just four total shots and just one save for Newman.
Whitcomb was credited with six saves on Heidelberg's seven shots on goal.
Heidelberg will be back on the field as they travel to Franciscan University this Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
