Berg stumbles in home opener

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team dropped its home opener, 2-0, to the Adrian College Bulldogs on a hot Wednesday afternoon.  After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs took the lead on a penalty kick and held on for the win.

Heidelberg dropped to 1-2 on the season while Adrian improved to 4-0.

HU goalkeeper Ryan Newman made on acrobatic save on a one-touch shot off a cross in the 40th minute, helping keep the game tied at zero.

Early in the second half, Cory Gilbert appeared to put the Student Princes on top with a shot that beat the Adrian goalie. Gilbert, though, was a step offside, negating the tally.

In the 61st, Kelly Itito was whistled for a foul in the penalty area.  Zack Combs converted, which gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Bryce Zeleznik nearly found the equalizer in the 67th minute.  On a shot high the left side, Adrian goalkeeper Spencer Brown dove and pushed it over the crossbar.

Adrian cushioned their lead with a goal in the 69th minute.  Dylan Wismont notched the goal off a feed from Elliot Hughes.

Heidelberg was outshot 17-12 in the game.  Newman made six saves while Brown made four.

The Student Princes return to action on Saturday when they visit Hope College (3-2).  Kickoff in Holland, Mich., is slated for 7 p.m.
