WILMINGTON -- A late lead evaporated as the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell on the road, 71-69, at Wilmington College on Saturday. The Student Princes led by 11 with five minutes to play but could not stop the Quakers rally.
The loss spoiled double-double efforts from
Prince Benson (16 points, 10 rebounds) and
Seth Hohman (10 points, 11 rebounds).
Dylan Woods and
Phariz Watkins reached double figures with 14 and 10.
Heidelberg (1-6, 0-2 OAC) has dropped six straight -- but four of the losses have been by four points or less.
As the early proceedings featured a teeter-totter score, a jumper by
Emmanuel Perdue with 13:34 remaining tied the game at 10 each. From the even score, Heidelberg opened up the game and went on an 18-4 run that featured six different scorers for the Tricolor.
The momentum however, quickly shifted in favor of the Quakers who closed the gap to a halftime deficit of just four points, 36-32.
As Wilmington (2-5, 1-0) fought back to within two, a pair of buckets by
Tamal Watkins and a layup from
Josh Dixon helped to keep them at arm's length as they went into the break with to halt the Wilmington rush.
The halt put on by the Student Princes near the end of the first half, was brief, as the Quakers started the second half on a 10-point swing that found them take a 46-40 lead with 15:14 remaining. In the swing, Jeffrey Mansfield poured in eight points for Wilmington.
Trailing by six, a 3-pointer from
Dylan Woods, followed by baskets from
Prince Benson and birthday-boy
Phariz Watkins flipped the score back in favor of The Berg. A free throw from DaeShawn Jackson tied the game at 47, but Benson,
Phariz Watkins, Woods, and
Seth Hohman all scored pushing their lead out to eight with under 10 minutes to go.
HU kept up the pressure and extended their lead even further to 11, at 65-54 with 5:14 left on the clock.
From there, Wilmington stormed back and erased the Student Princes' lead. Ahead by two points with just 18 seconds left, a free throw from
Dylan Woods looked to seal off the game.
A quick inbound and score from Jackson got the Quakers within one. With Heidelberg inbounding, a five second violation was called, giving the hosts back the inbound. With the ball back, an inbound to Jeffrey Mansfield allowed a quick jumper which the guard knocked down for the 70-69 lead. The win was sealed on a free throw from Matt Smith.
Wilmington was led on the scoreboard by Mansfield's 23 points and Jackson's 17. Jackson also led the Quakers with eight rebounds, and Payton Smith contributed a team-high three assists.
