Berg goes 1-2 at Kalahari

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- On Saturday, at the second-ever Kalahari Duals, the Heidelberg University wrestling team compiled a 1-2 record in dual competition.

Hosting the event at Kalahari Resorts and Convention Center for the second straight year, the Student Princes (3-6) attracted some of the best talent in the region with the likes of No. 5 Mount Union, No. 6 Baldwin Wallace and highly competitive Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Adrian, Olivet, and Defiance.

On the day, Dylan Roth, Mason Brainard, and Tre Bogetich finished the day undefeated for HU.

ADRIAN - 24    HEIDELBERG - 21
At 125, Harrison Hadley defeated Dajun Jones in a high-scoring bout by a final decision of 14-10, which gave Heidelberg an early kickstart. Following Hadley, Mason Brainard held the upper hand for much of his contest against Tanner Smith. Late in the third period, Brainard had locked up the decision, but added bonus points with a pin with just five seconds left in the bout.

Adrian responded with a major at 141 and a tech fall at 149 to level the scores at nine after four.

At the halfway mark, The Berg slid into the slightest of advantages as Tre Bogetich earned a 4-1 decision in 157 that was buoyed by a two-point near fall in the second period.

Devin Miller picked up an identical decision as Bogetich with a 4-1 win. A strong effort of third-period defense from Miller kept Derrick Duvall's efforts at a comeback at bay.

With the Student Princes ahead 15-9, HU and Adrian exchanged pins at 174 and 184, as Dylan Roth pinned Bryant Moore in the latter in just 1:30 of the first period.

Devon Pingel of Adrian responded by pinning Austin Smith at 197 to even the score at 21 heading in the 285 clash.

There Isaiah Espinoza defeated Blake Jerome by a 6-0 margin to give the Bulldogs the dual win, 24-21.

HEIDELBERG - 12     WISCONSIN-OSHKOSH - 31
Oshkosh opened the dual with a major decision at 125, but Brainard responded at 133 with a narrow 5-3 decision. Brainard was working a defensive strategy and utilized a third period takedown to emerge with the win.

UWO came back from the 133 slip-up with wins at 141 and 149, but the failure to secure bonus points left the door open for the Student Princes heading toward the back half of the lineup.

Tre Bogetich's tight 2-0 win brought the Berg a little bit closer with the team score sitting at 10-6 through five matches.

Unlucky for HU, the 165 and 174 bouts did not bode positive results, as Oshkosh picked up nine points off a decision and a pin.

Dylan Roth got six points back for the Student Princes at 184 as he quickly made work of Jake Boyette before folding him over for a pin after just over two minutes of action.

The Titans took the 197 and 285 weight classes via pin to close out the win 31-12.

HEIDELBERG - 40    DEFIANCE - 7
In their final dual of the day, Heidelberg stormed out to an 11-point lead as Harrison Hadley got six points via forfeit and Mason Brainard won by tech fall over Raymier Hickerson (23-3).

Defiance then took 141 by major decision and 149 by a hotly contested 10-8 decision, closing the team score to 11-7.

However, a lengthy bout at 157, beset by blood timeouts on numerous occasions, saw Joe Damm win via a tiebreaker takedown, moving the lead back out to seven points.

Devin Miller earned another hard-fought win at 165 that went the distance. Miller took the bout via a 6-3 win. Jeremiah Slagle followed up Miller with a six-point forfeit that pushed the team's score out to 23 points compared to the Yellow Jackets' seven.

At 184, Dylan Roth picked up his third first-period pin of the day, sticking Hunter Mcnutt after 2:36.

Tacking on additional points, Austin Smith won his first bout of the day with a tech fall win, courtesy of a riding point. Smith finished off Mason Morris 17-3, but the riding point pushed his score to a tech fall, giving HU an additional team point.

Closing out the day was Eric Adkins who flipped his opponent Rigoberto Villa to the mat and finished off a pin, sealing off the Student Princes' 40-7 win.

The win over the Yellow Jackets snapped a skid of five straight dual losses for Heidelberg and sends them into the holiday season on a high note.

UP NEXT:
The Student Princes will remain idle over the holidays and return to action at the National Duals in Louisville, Ky. on January 10-11.
