Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berg drops a heartbreaker in double overtime

TIFFIN -- In heartbreaking fashion and with three attempts to tie late in the game, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team fell by a final score of 83-80 in double overtime against Albion College on Tuesday evening.

The loss marks the fourth-straight for Heidelberg and moves them to 1-4 on the year. On a bright note, the Student Princes' 80 points was their most of the season.

Heidelberg was pushed forward by a fairly balanced offense, led by a season-best 20 points on 50% shooting from Alex Arellano. Tamal Watkins poured in 18 points which included a near perfect night at the free throw line (7-of-8). Dylan Woods was the only other Berg shooter in double-digits with 14 points.

Prince Benson led the Student Princes with eight rebounds, while Bailey Croft pulled down seven, including four offensive boards.

Distributing the ball, four Heidelberg players tallied three assists -- Tamal Watkins, Arellano, Croft, and Phariz Watkins

The Student Princes shot well in the early going, taking an early 7-0 lead.  Later, HU pushed out to a nine-point lead with 12:40 to play in the first half.

Albion (4-1), however, found its rhythm midway through the period.  A 6-0 run with 8:25 left in the opening frame helped the Britons take a lead.  The visitors led 35-33 at halftime.

In the second half, the Student Princes used a 17-6 run over a nearly seven-minute span to build up a 50-43 advantage.  During the spurt, HU was 6-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

With six minutes left in regulation, The Tricolor led 63-55.  The Britons answered with a 10-0 run over the next 3:14 -- led by eight points from Quinton Armstrong -- taking a 65-63 lead.  With 1:48 to play, Josh Dixon buried a jumper that tied the game at 67.  Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the period.

In the first overtime, a 3-pointer by Woods turned a two-point deficit into a 72-71 lead with 1:41 left.  Jamezell Davis responded with a bucket at the other end, which was originally called a two-point shot -- but was correctly changed to a 3-pointer.  On the ensuing possession, Tamal Watkins hit two free throws to tie the game at 74.  Again, both teams failed to score in their final possession of the frame.

In double overtime, Tamal Watkins sank both free throws on two straight possessions, which gave HU an 80-78 lead with 1:45 to play.  Davis gave the Britons a lead on the next possession, burying another shot from long range.

After Albion got a stop and added a layup, Heidelberg had three excellent looks at potential game-tying 3-pointers -- but none fell for the home team.

Caden Ebeling had a double-double for Albion with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Armstrong led all scorers with 22 points. Jamezell Davis Jr. added 16 and Juwan Perry had 11 to round out the leading scorers for the visitors.

For Heidelberg, the Albion game was their first double-overtime game since a 98-93 win over North Central (Ill.) on Nov. 18, 2017.

Heidelberg will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday break before hosting their conference opener vs. Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday December 4th at 7 p.m.
