Olivet, Michigan -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team went 1-3 at the Olivet College Duals. A big win started the day on a high note, but two narrow losses put a damper on the trip to the Wolverine State.
Hayden Bates and
Dylan Roth each went a perfect 4-0 on the day, while
Mason Brainard was 3-0.
Slade Todd and
Joe Damm each won both of their matches.
In dual meets on the season, Heidelberg is 2-4.
HEIDELBERG 43 ST. CLAIR 9
Heidelberg used five pins to power its way to a win in the opening match. At 125,
Harrison Hadley was down 1-0 in the third before tying the match with a quick escape. Seven seconds later, Hadley scored a takedown which served as the difference in the match in a 3-2 win over Cody Wood.
At 133, Dominic Todaro scored first against HU's
Mason Brainard. Brainard, though, rectified the situation quickly. After escaping, Brainard notched a takedown and two nearfall points. After allowing an escape, Brainard closed the first period with another takedown. Neutral to start the second, Brainard pushed out to an 11-4 lead with a takedown and two more back points. In the third, he earned the tech fall with a reversal and two separate instances of four nearfall points. He won 21-3.
From 141-157, HU picked up pins.
Hayden Bates stuck Keegan Warren in 55 seconds,
Slade Todd pinned Ben Hulley in 3:54 and Joseph Damm pinned Louis Treash in 1:21.
At 165,
Dominic Finch completed a 16-0 dismantling of Jacob Horst (not to be confused with HU's
Jacob Horsch) in the second period.
St. Clair got on the board at 174, but their momentum was short-lived.
Dylan Roth and
Austin Smith registered pins at 184 and 197. Roth used 61 seconds and Smith used 65 seconds to pick up six points.
St. Clair closed the match with a pin at 285.
ALMA 24 HEIDELBERG 19
The Scots picked up major decisions at 125 and 133 to take an early 8-0 lead. Bates put HU on the board with his second pin of the day, sticking Trent Lashuay in 2:05. Alma returned the favor with a pin at 149.
Down 14-6, Heidelberg responded.
At 157, Damm scored all of his points in the second period and beat Mason Priest, 3-0.
Devin Miller, in his first match of the day, picked up a 6-3 win at 165.
Jeremiah Slagle continued the hot spell for the Student Princes with a 12-5 win over Lucas Brewer.
Roth made it four straight for HU with a 13-4 major decision over Dylan Seaton. The win gave HU a 20-19 advantage in team points.
Alma, though, closed the match with a pin and a major decision -- earning the win in the hard-fought dual.
MILLIKIN 23 HEIDELBERG 19
Millikin got on the board with a pin at 125 before Heidelberg reeled off three straight wins.
Mason Brainard won his second match of the day, beating Ren Dazey, 9-6. Bates stuck his third opponent of the day -- pinning Maxx Fritz in 1:24. Todd majored Garrick Walker at 149, 14-6. The wins gave HU a 13-6 advantage.
Wins at 157 and 165, including a tech fall, gave the lead back to Millikin, 14-13.
Slagle won in overtime at 174 over Jake Tisza and Roth beat Taylor McGiffen, 10-6. Heidelberg led, 19-14.
Millikin wound up taking the match with a pin at 197 and a win at 285.
OLIVET 31 HEIDELBERG 14
Down 3-0 after 125, Heidelberg surged into the lead with a tech fall by Brainard at 133. Brainard outscored Bradley Payne 8-1 in each of the first two periods, then ended the drubbing with a takedown with 53 seconds remaining.
HU added to the lead when Bates notched his fourth win of the day. He beat Reese Wallis, 4-1.
Olivet surged ahead, taking the next four matches -- all of which included bonus points -- and led 23-8.
Roth broke the Comets' momentum, pinning Kamyab Kamali in 1:24 -- his fourth win of the day.
Olivet won at 197 and 285 to seal the match.
UP NEXT:
Heidelberg will return to action in early December. They'll head to the Ohio Northern Invitational on Dec. 7 before hosting the Kalahari Duals in Sandusky on Dec. 14.
