UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- In their second straight OAC dual, the Heidelberg University wrestling team fell on the road to John Carroll University by a final score of 25-15.
With the loss, the Student Princes level both their overall dual record and their conference dual mark at 1-1. JCU improves to 2-1, 1-0 on the young season.
"Unfortunately, they (John Carroll) took it to us tonight," said head coach
Tony Patrizi. "We trained well to get to this point, but did not perform."
At 125,
Harrison Hadley fell to Kyle Murray by decision. Murray worked the bout in his favor by a final score of 6-2.
In the 133 weight class,
Mason Brainard narrowly dropped to Andrew Perelka. Brainard had two takedowns of Perelka, but fell by a score of 6-4.Â
John Carroll earned bonus points at 141 and 149 with a pin and a tech fall to push their team lead to a commanding 17-0.
Heidelberg rebounded at 157 through an 8-5 decision win from
Tre Bogetich. Bogetich defeated Austin Victor of the Blue Streaks to get the Berg on the board in team scoring.Â
JCU responded with another bonus point victory at 165 as Luke Reicosky picked up a 14-3 major decision over
Devin Miller.Â
Heidelberg took advantage of the core of their lineup at 174 and 184 and picked up a critical nine team points, giving the team a shot to overcome the deficit with two weight classes remaining.Â
First,
Jeremiah Slagle earned a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Sam Gross, and then
Dylan Roth pinned Aidan Whitis in the first period (2:15). With the win, Roth moves to 10-0 on the season.Â
That hope quickly sizzled out as John Carroll's Christian Hipsher earned a major decision at 197 over
Austin Smith. The four points put the dual out of reach for the Berg heading into the final bout of the night.Â
Ending the dual,
Da'Veon Parker picked up a well-earned 2-1 victory, but the three points proved to be only consolation. Parker, who matched up about 60 pounds lighter than his counterpart in John Stasek, prevented the typical heavyweight moves and truly earned the decision.
With Parker's three points, Heidelberg closed the gap to 25-15 on the final scoreboard.Â
"Through this adversity is an opportunity for our guys to learn and grow," said Patrizi. "We're back to work tomorrow."
Up next for the Student Princes will be a trip to Olivet College for the Comet Duals this Saturday. There, they will face St. Clair, Alma, Millikin and Olivet in dual matches. The first dual is scheduled for 11 a.m.
