TIFFIN -- Competing for the first time on their new competition mats, the Heidelberg University wrestling team handled visiting Wilmington College, 54-3. Combined with three forfeits, Heidelberg won six of seven contested bouts en route to victory.
The Student Princes moved to 1-0 in dual meets this season. The Quakers, in just their second season of competition after restarting their program, dropped to 0-1.
After starting with a forfeit at 133,
Hayden Bates added six more points for the Student Princes with a 37-second pin of Gabe Obregon.
Up 12-0,
Slade Todd muscled his way to a 10-point first period. In the second, Todd took down Chris Beltre again, but this time he was able to stick him for a pin in 4:03.
At 157, Wilmington's Clayton Schirmer scored first, taking down
Joe Damm. Damm, however, quickly escaped. Damm started down to start the second period and escaped with 25 seconds left, tying the match at 2. Schirmer, however, recorded another takedown before the buzzer sounded. In the third, with Schmirer starting down, Damm was nearly able to turn Schmirer, but the Quaker freshman escaped. Despite excitement in the final few seconds, Wilmington -- coached by former Heidelberg All-American Justin Kihn -- came away with a 9-5 win.
Prior to intermission, 'Berg sophomore
Devin Miller -- who missed the tail end of a promising freshman season because of an injury -- took an early lead with a takedown. Up 2-0 in the second, another quick takedown and two backpoints bolstered Miller's advantage over Brennen Greene. Miller started on the bottom in the third and quickly escaped, making the score 7-1. Midway through the third, Greene was forced into a medical default. HU led 24-3 at the break.
When wrestling resumed,
Jeremiah Slagle scored early, then pinned Patrick Kelly in 55 seconds. Coupled with a Quaker forfeit at 184, Heidelberg led, 36-3.
At 197,
Austin Smith took down Bruno Pattison near the edge of the mat to take a 2-0 lead. After conceding two backpoints, Pattison tallied a reversal, cutting Smith's lead in half. With 35 seconds left in the first, Smith escaped. Ahead 5-2 and starting down, Smith escaped midway through the second. Pattison registered a takedown in the waning seconds of the period. Smith, starting on top, rolled Pattison early in the third and landed a pin (5:26).
In the final contested bout of the night,
Blake Jerome and Seth Jermer grappled neutrally for the first period. The second period began with Jerome choosing to start down, followed by a quick reversal. Jermer escaped in short order, but was later saddled with a stalling point. With Jerome on the attack, Jermer was again hit with a stalling point as he breathlessly moseyed back to the center of the mat. Jerome added a takedown and led 6-1 after two. Two more stalling points in Jerome's favor sent the 'Berg senior hunting for bonus points. His quest was short-lived, as Jermer stalled out and was disqualified.
The match concluded with a Wilmington forfeit at 125. Six points for
Harrison Hadley gave HU a 54-3 win.
Heidelberg returns to action next Tuesday at John Carroll. The OAC match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
