ALLIANCE -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team got back on track with a critical OAC win away to the ever-tough University of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.
The Berg, now 21-5 on the year and 5-2 in conference play, out-hit the Purple Raiders (19-7, 4-3) by a margin of .182 to .096, which helped push them over the edge in the tight 3-1 match.
After taking the first set 25-13, Heidelberg tripped up in set two by a score of 23-25. However, from there they were able to put away the match with third and fourth set wins, 25-21 and 25-23.
For Heidelberg,
Sarah Oney crossed the 500 digs plateau for the season with a 32 dig performance in the four set match. Oney's performance was her third 30+ dig outing of the season and matched her career best of 32, set earlier this season in five sets against Wisconsin-Whitewater. The sophomore libero now has 686 in her career.
Offensively,
Taylor Valentine led all hitters with 15 kills on 63 tries.
Amy Feczer contributed 11 on .417 hitting percentage, and
Olivia Cristian added 10 kills.
Anna McNabb (28 assists) and Julianna Pena (16) shared setting responsibilities for the Berg once again.
Alongside Oney in the back row, Valentine contributed 18 digs, while
Peyton Miller added 16 pickups as well. In the front row defense, Feczer had a total of five blocks to lead the way.
In the first set, a 15-4 drubbing early on proved to be all the difference Heidelberg needed.
Sarah Oney,
Taylor Valentine, Julianna Pena, and
Mya Morris all held consistent periods of serving over the run. Mount troubled back, but three errors late on gave the set to Heidelberg.
In the second set, Heidelberg found themselves ahead 23-21 late on, but a
Peyton Miller service error gave Mount control. From there, the Purple Raiders rattled off three straight points, which included two Heidelberg errors, to take the set.
The Berg was forced to flip around a three-point deficit early on. Down, 8-5, the Student Princes went on a seven point run that proved to be a crucial difference in the 25-21 final score. Two kills by Cristian and another by Feczer drove the run.
Heidelberg almost let Mount Union back into the set, but a pair of late kills by Crisitan sealed the match as the hosts took six of the last nine points in the set.
The match looked destined to be yet another five-set thriller for Heidelberg as Mount saw themselves ahead by as many as seven early on. From there, though, the Purple Raiders created their own demise and allowed the Berg back into the match with a handful of errors.
Down 20-16, the Student Princes made a late charge that eventually put the match to bed. A kill by
Alyssa Crusey followed by blocks from
Amy Feczer and
Jordann Gudorf was what they needed to get over the hump. On match point, Mount Union's Breanna Arnett swung an attack out of bounds and gifted the match to the Student Princes.
Among the loads of errors, the Purple Raiders saw three players hit double-digits in kills -- Arnett (13), Marlee Peck (10), and Maria Ellesin (10). Katie May led the way with 19 assists, while Alyssa Kasaris has a team-high 26 digs. Mount did out-block Heidelberg 8-6 led by Peck's four.
Heidelberg will visit John Carroll on Tuesday night for their penultimate match of the season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
