VB: Five-set rally highlights weekend

BLUFFTON -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team went 2-1 on the weekend at the Bluffton Spiketacular, including a come-from-behind victory over the hosts on Saturday.  Morgan Strenk was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.

Over the three matches, the Student Princes featured a balanced attack, with five players gathering 25+ kills.  Taylor Valentine totalled 29 kills to lead the way. Amy Feczer (27), Strenk (26), Laura Schrag (25) and Alyssa Crusey (25) were close behind.  Anna McNabb had 118 saves.

Taylor Arbogast averaged 5.83 digs per set and finished with 70 for the weekend.  Schrag had 14 blocks.

On the season, Heidelberg is 5-3 overall.  

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 3  DePauw 1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-15, 25-14)

Heidelberg won its first match of the weekend, dispatching DePauw in four sets on Friday.  Schrag and Valentine led the offense with 12 kills apiece. Feczer followed with nine kills while Strenk and Crusey each tallied eight.  

McNabb dished out 43 assists.  

Defensively, Arbogast racked up 21 digs to lead the team.  Sydney Moore finished with 13 digs. Schrag picked up six blocks at the net.  

As a team, Heidelberg attacked at a .248 clip while holding DePauw to .130.  

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 3  Bluffton 2 (25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12)

In their first five-set match of the year, the Student Princes were forced to rally from a 2-1 deficit over the hosts on Saturday morning.  Heidelberg conceded the first three points of the fifth set, making their comeback more remarkable.

McNabb tallied 56 assists, with four teammates amassing 10+ kills -- Feczer (15), Crusey (12), Valentine (12) and Strenk (11).  

Arbogast paced the team with a 30-dig effort.  Valentine added 22, Moore had 18 and McNabb had 17 in the win.  Again, Schrag registered six blocks -- two solo and four assisted.  

GAME THREE:   No. 23 Thomas More 3   Heidelberg 0 (25-14, 25-16, 27-25)

After the thriller with Bluffton, the Student Princes struggled to maintain momentum in a three-set loss to nationally-ranked Thomas More.  

Strenk led with seven kills and McNabb tallied 19 assists. Arbogast finished with 19 digs.  

UP NEXT: Heidelberg visits Defiance College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match with the Yellow Jackets.
