VB: Berg quickly sweeps OWU

Box Score

TIFFIN -- A raucous crowd was treated to a dominating win inside Seiberling Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Heidelberg University volleyball team brushed aside Ohio Wesleyan University 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-15) en route to their third-straight win of the young season. Ohio Wesleyan drops to 2-3 on the season after the loss.

Anna McNabb made her 2018 debut to rousing success.  The junior setter tallied 36 assists and 13 digs -- both team highs.  Taylor Valentine and Morgan Strenk paced the offense with nine kills apiece, while Laura Schrag and Alyssa Crusey each contributed four.

Defensively, Valentine had 12 digs and libero Taylor Arbogast had 11.  Strong at the net, the Student Princes racked up nine blocks -- including six by Schrag.  Valentine notched four blocks.

Heidelberg (3-2) raced out to an 8-2 lead in the opening set, including an ace from Arbogast that prompted an OWU timeout.  The respite did little to stop the Student Princes, who dominated the set.

The Battling Bishops jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second before an attack error ignited The Berg.  The Taylors -- Arbogast and Taylor Valentine -- helped string together good HU runs with strong serves. The set was capped by a kill by Jordann Gudorf.

In the third set, OWU tried to make things interesting, but a string of 10 straight serves by McNabb re-established control for the Student Princes. After a brief swing in possession, two kills by Schrag and Szawranskyj and a Katie Keegan block iced the game for The Berg.

As a team, Heidelberg attacked at a .337 clip and held the visitors to an astonishing -.018 attack percentage.

The Student Princes return to the court this weekend at the Bluffton University Spiketacular on Friday and Saturday. The team will face DePauw on Friday at 5 p.m., and Bluffton and Thomas More on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The next home match for HU will be on September 18 at 7 p.m. as Denison University pays a visit to Seiberling Gymnasium.
