VB: Berg on wrong end of five-set thriller

Box Score

ADA -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team dropped their second straight OAC five-set thriller on the road to Ohio Northern University. ONU emerged with the win, 3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 12-15).

With the loss, Heidelberg falls to 17-8 (3-3), while Ohio Northern jumps to 16-7 (5-1).

After dominating the first set, 25-15, Berg dropped the second match to even the set count. HU jumped out to a 19-11 lead during the third set, but a string of Madison Broering services drew the Polar Bears back into the set. ONU eventually took the set 25-23, taking the 2-1 lead.

Berg clawed their way back to force a fifth set by taking the fourth, 25-21. Maddie Szawranskyj had three of her five service aces during the set. Unfortunately, ONU took control of the fifth set midway through, after a brief back-and-forth, and never looked back, taking the match on a 15-12 scoreline.

Laura Schrag smashed a career-high 22 kills to lead the Student Prince offense. Schrag also reached a career mark with 12 total blocks over the course of the match.

Also displaying a solid performance for the Berg was Morgan Strenk who collected a double-double of her own -- 15 kills, 20 digs.

Contribuiting on the offensive side, Amy Feczer hit a solid .333 percentage while collecting 13 kills. Anna McNabb facilitated the attack for Heidelberg by dishing out 55 assists.

Defensively for the Student Princes, Taylor Arbogast scooped up 29 digs. Taylor Valentine and Sarah Oney each chipped with 10 digs of their own. Along with Schrag's 12 blocks, the team collected 14 more -- by a combined effort of Strenk, Feczer, Valentine, McNabb, Szawranskyj, Melissa Groudle, and Alyssa Crusey.

Ohio Northern hit slightly better than the Berg over the five sets, compiling a .193 average compared to HU's .173 clip. Also making a difference down the stretch was the total number of errors -- ONU committed 41 compared to Heidelberg's 44.

Heidelberg hopes to bounce back in OAC play at home on Saturday, October 20, vs. Mount Union for a 1 p.m. contest inside Seiberling Gymnasium.
