Box Score WESTERVILLE -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team handed Otterbein University its first conference loss, beating the Cardinals in four sets -- 25-20, 23-25, 29-27, 25-20. A trio of Student Princes reached double figures in kills and Jordann Gudorf registered 10 blocks.
Heidelberg moved to 11-11, 2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Otterbein dropped to 21-3, 4-1.
The Student Princes took the first set with inspired play, 25-20. Taylor Valentine picked up seven kills in the set and Jordann Gudorf had four blocks.
Otterbein stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Trailing throughout the set, Heidelberg managed to inch as close as one at 19-18, before the Cards eked out a 25-23 win.
The hosts appeared to be poised for a third set win, leading 24-21. Heidelberg, however, rallied back and took the set 29-27.
The Student Princes rode the momentum of the third set rally into the fourth set. They had a couple cracks at match point before winning the fourth set, 25-20.
Valentine finished with 16 kills and 11 digs. Morgan Strenk swung it well, notching 15 kills. Laura Schrag had a day, with 10 kills and five blocks.
As usual, Anna McNabb dished up the offense, tallying 48 assists. Rachel Raimondo amassed 20 digs while Taylor Arbogast contributed 11.
In attendance was 2017 graduate and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American setter Karlie DiRuzza, who flew back to Ohio as part of Heidelberg's Academic Recognition weekend. Flight delays held DiRuzza back, preventing her from attending the unveiling of her second medallion on the Adams Academic All-American Plaza on Saturday morning. Her father Joe spoke on her behalf.
Heidelberg will honor the Landess Scholar Athlete Award winners from the spring during Tuesday's volleyball match with Baldwin Wallace (25-2, 3-2 OAC). The match will begin at 7 p.m.
