Bennie hits 1,000; MBB wins on Collins FT

Box Score

TIFFIN -- On Wednesday morning, Seiberling Gymnasium hosted a keynote speech by famed American science educator Bill Nye the Science Guy. The speech was part of Heidelberg University's HYPE Program.

On Wednesday evening, the Seiberling Gymnasium crowd remained hyped as the Heidelberg men's basketball team picked up a memorable 87-86 win over Baldwin Wallace.

The win -- clinched by a senior DeAvery Collins free throw with 0.4 seconds on the clock -- featured the 1,000th career point for junior Kiere Bennie.

Bennie finished with a team-high 23 points. He became the 30th member of Heidelberg's 1,000 point club with a running layup early in the second half.

Three other Student Princes reached double figures -- Chris Moxley with 15 points, Collins with 12 points and Prince Benson with 11 points.

The Tricolor improved to 8-10 overall, 4-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. BW slipped to 9-9 overall, 4-7 in the OAC. The Heidelberg victory snapped a string of 11 straight losses to BW.

With 31 seconds remaining, a free throw by Moxley tied the game at 86. An errant attempt on his second foul shot gave BW possession with a nearly identical play clock/game clock differential. Jay Battle dribbled out most of the time near the timeline, then drove off a screen by Jake Fetherolf. Battle dished back to Fetherolf at the top of the key. With Moxley flying by on a close-out, Fetherolf passed up the 3-pointer -- instead opting for a one-dribble pull up jumper.

After his attempt drew back iron, Fetherolf and Collins converged for the rebound. Collins grabbed it and was run into by Fetherolf. The whistle, which came with 0.4 on the clock, went Heidelberg's way.

In the double bonus, Collins rimmed out the first free throw before calmly draining the second.

Following a pair of timeouts, BW had a good look at a potential game winner. Battle threw the ball ¾ of the way down court while Fetherolf caught and fired in midair -- sending the off-balance jumper off the glass.

The Student Princes seemed to have control over most of the game, though both teams struggled from the floor in the opening minutes. A 3-pointer from the wing by Michael Davis broke an 8-8 tie with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets responded at the other end with a three-point play from Cam Kuhn to knot the game back up at 11.  Kuhn finished with a game-high 25 points.

The Student Princes found their offensive rhythm, going an 11-2 run midway through the first half. Layups from Prince Benson and Collins along with a pair of free throws by Bennie pushed the HU lead to 25-13.

An and-one from Moxley capped off the Heidelberg run, holding a 28-17 edge with 8:22 to play in the first half.

Mike Kaminski appeared to give BW some life, draining a triple from the corner. Sophomore Myron Prewitt answered for the Berg with a 3-pointer of his own.

With 3:41 left in the first half, Kaminski hit a three to cut the Berg lead back to single digits. Collins responded for the home team, netting a 3-pointer at the other end. Following a defensive stop, a triple from Benson at the wing gave the Student Princes a 45-30 lead with just over two minutes until halftime.

A Baldwin Wallace 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half cut the HU lead to 47-36 at the half.

The Berg would carry their momentum into the second half. A Benson jumper and a layup from Andrew Grothouse gave the Student Princes a 15-point lead early in the half.

Battle knocked down a three with 11:09 to play, cutting the Heidelberg lead to 66-58. Bennie quickly responded for HU with a jumper to push their lead back to double digits. Grothouse and Moxley added with layups for a 72-58 Heidelberg lead.

The Yellow Jackets methodically chipped away, finally taking a lead with just under five minutes to play. BW lead by as many as four points late in the game before the heart-stopping final minute of play gave HU the victory.

NOTES & QUOTES

Heidelberg dominated the game in the paint, outscoring BW 46-22.

The Student Princes scored 18 points off 17 Baldwin Wallace turnover.

With 1,007 career points, Bennie is tied with Greg Mossing (1981-85) for 28th place all-time -- one point ahead of Mike Fischer (1962-66).

Prior to Wednesday, Heidelberg's last win over BW came on Jan. 26, 2011 -- almost exactly six years ago. It was an 83-62 Berg win in Tiffin.

Kiere Bennie on getting to 1,000 points: "It's a great accomplishment, but I owe it all to my teammates, the coaches and the whole Heidelberg community ... The support they have shown us through the ups and downs has made the difference."

DeAvery Collins on making the game-winning free throw: "Usually, the second shot is easier than the first one ... Even though I missed the first one, I knew I was going to make the second one."
