Box Score BEREA, Ohio -- In a tale of two halves, the Heidelberg University men's basketball team was defeated by No. 24 Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday evening. A 14-point halftime lead for the Student Princes slipped away as the Yellow Jackets rallied for a 67-64 victory at home.
Playing near his hometown, Cleveland native Myron Prewitt had a career-high 21 points in the loss. With 11 rebounds, Prewitt finished with a double-double -- his first of the season and second of his career.
Chris Moxley added 16 points and four steals in the losing effort.
Heidelberg drops to 4-3 overall, 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. BW improves to 5-1, 1-1 in conference.
The Student Princes opened up with an 11-2 run in the first three minutes, capped by a 3-pointer by Michael Schuller. Four minutes later, a triple by Kiere Bennie put the Tricolor up 20-5.
A quick 11-0 run by the hosts tightened the contest up midway through the period.
Leading 25-21 with 5:34 left, a pair of free throws by Andrew Grothouse with 5:21 helped ignite a fast-paced 12-2 run to close the period. During that stretch, BW missed four early-in-the-shot-clock 3-pointers that allowed the Student Princes to score in transition. Heidelberg headed to the locker room with a 37-23 cushion.
The large lead evaporated quickly after the break. Three 3-pointers, including a four-point play by Mike Kaminski, helped BW whittle the game down to two at 41-39.
Heidelberg rattled off a mini seven-point run to get back out to a nine-point advantage. Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets clawed back into the game. Trailing 59-57, a 3-pointer by Cam Kuhn and a layup by Jay Battle gave the hosts a 62-59 lead with 4:14 remaining.
Down 65-64 with less than a minute to play, Chris Moxley stole the ball and dashed to the basket. His potential go-ahead finger roll rattled halfway through the cylinder before bouncing out. After a failed put-back attempt by Michael Schuller, a foul sent Kaminsky to the line at the other end. Kaminsky converted both free throws, giving BW a three-point lead with 9.6 seconds left.
Out of a timeout, Moxley's potential game-tying 3-pointer from the right side again rattled in and out. Time expired as the ball bounced out, and the Yellow Jackets escaped with a 67-64 win.
Kuhn finished with 21 points to lead BW.
"The guys battled," said head coach Andy Bucheit. "We have a willing group who will continue to get better every day."
Mike Mason and Bennie each had nine points. Mason had a team-high three blocked shots.
"I'm proud of our effort," said Bucheit. "We will show up tomorrow, ready to learn."
