Box Score TIFFIN -- Heidelberg University men's basketball coach Andy Bucheit wasn't sure how his team would respond after stumbling late in a loss at No. 24 Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday.
97 points later, Bucheit was pleased with the answer.
The Student Princes upended Wilmington College, 97-85, in a whistle-filled matinee in Seiberling Gymnasium. With two high-pressure teams squaring off, the game featured 61 fouls and 84 free throws. In the end, Chris Moxley's 22 points helped lift the Tricolor to victory.
"I was nervous to see how we would respond today, but our guys did a great job and passed that test," said Bucheit, in his fourth season. "We didn't get discouraged by that loss to BW."
Heidelberg improved to 5-3 overall, 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Quakers dropped to 3-5, 0-3.
Four players, including Moxley, finished in double figures. Kiere Bennie had 18, Myron Prewitt had 15 and Mike Mason had 10 points in the victory. Prince Benson had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Trailing 16-15 with 11:09 left in the first half, the Tricolor embarked on a 13-0 run, bookended by 3-pointers by Michael Davis. HU would lead by as many as 14 in the first half and led 42-34 at the break.
The Student Princes started the second half on an 8-0 run, taking control of the contest. Heidelberg extended their lead to as many as 19 points in the first 10 minutes of the period. When Wilmington got to within nine, Benson stepped into an open 3-pointer to help Heidelberg regain momentum. Benson's triple came as part of another 8-0 run that put Heidelberg up 77-60 with 8:29 left.
Later, the Quakers chipped away again and trailed by 10. Two 3-pointers by Prewitt thwarted that threat as the Student Princes held a double-digit lead for the remainder.
Heidelberg's bench outscored the visitors, 57-31. Moxley scored nine of his 22 points -- which tied a career high -- at the free throw line.
"Moving forward, hopefully we can continue to use wins like this where we did a lot of great things," said Bucheit. "I don't want us to get caught up in the outcome ... we want to get better at the things we want to be good at."
HU has won five straight over the Quakers. The 97 points were the most for HU since a 102-72 win over Muskingum last season.
Heideberg returns to Sayger Court on Wednesday for a non-conference contest with Adrian College (3-3). Tipoff in Tiffin is slated for 7:30 p.m.
