Box Score TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team dispatched the University of Mount Union in quick fashion on Saturday, winning in straight sets. The Student Princes attacked at a .299 clip en route to the victory -- 25-19, 25-15, 25-18.
The win pushed Heidelberg to 13-6 overall, 4-0 in the OAC. Mount Union fell to 12-6, 1-2 in conference.
Senior Sarah Parker led the way with a thunderous 19 kills, swinging .485. Classmate Janessa Scott tallied 13 kills. Morgan Strenk added nine in the win.
Karlie DiRuzza notched 44 assists.
Defensively, Rachel Raimondo had 18 digs, Megan Mills had 10 and Sydney Moore had nine.
Tied at 8-8 in the first set, the Tricolor took four straight points capped by a Parker kill that prompted a MTU timeout. The break did little to stop the HU momentum, as the Berg would maintain a steady cushion throughout the middle part of the set. The Purple Raiders closed to within one at 20-19, but another Parker kill ignited a 6-0 set-clinching run.
A quick 5-1 run in the second set forced the visitors into an early timeout. Again, Mount whittled the HU lead to one at 14-13. But again, Heidelberg responded. The Student Princes closed the set on an 11-2 run. Each time MTU managed to win a point, their subsequent serve was errant.
In the third set, the Purple Raiders managed to take a 9-8 lead -- their only advantage of the entire match. A Scott kill started the Berg on a 9-2 run -- giving the home team a comfortable 18-11 advantage. The match was capped by an ace from DiRuzza -- one of six on the afternoon for Heidelberg.
