Box Score BEXLEY, Ohio -- Propelled by Joseph Tallarico's two goals and Jason Chugh's first collegiate goal, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team upset Capital University 4-1 Tuesday afternoon. The win improves the Berg to 7-8-1, 4-3-1 in conference play. The Crusaders slip to 12-3-2, 4-2-2 OAC.
Pending on the outcomes from tonight's matches around the OAC, the Student Princes now sit in fifth place in the conference. The top six teams will make the tournament. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will earn a first-round bye, while the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed hosts the No. 5 seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The home team struck first. Alex Komartz crossed a ball to Tristan Bentley who flew down the right sideline for a breakaway. Bentley beat HU goalkeeper Alex Archambeau with a strike to the far post, putting Capital ahead 1-0.
Alexis Mendoza scored the equalizer for the Tricolor with his fifth goal of the season. Greg Raimondo served a free kick into the box, which was headed out by a Capital defender. The ball found the head of Rodrigo Meza, and Mendoza got a head on the ball in the air and sent it past Capital goalkeeper Jason Niswonger.
In the 49th minute, Jay Sato flew down the right sideline, feeding a ball into the top of the box. Chugh used a nifty spin move to get past a Capital defender, and hammered the ball into the lower right corner with his left foot.
Minutes later, Tallarico added a crucial insurance goal for the Student Princes. Tallarico capitalized on a misplayed ball by the Crusader defense. He broke through the defenders, forcing Niswonger to come out of the box. Tallarico launched a shot past Niswonger, giving HU a 3-1 edge.
With the game well in hand, Tallarico struck again, footing the ball past Niswonger from the right side.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Archambeau tallied four saves for the Student Princes, including a brilliant save in the 20th minute. Archambeau made a leaping grab to his left to snag a headed ball by a Capital striker. Niswonger recorded three saves for the Crusaders.
Tallarico and Mendoza are now tied for the team lead with five goals apiece this season.
Capital outshot HU 13-10 in the match.
