Box Score TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team fell to the No. 5 Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Tuesday, 3-0. The Student Princes fell to 5-7 overall, 2-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference action. ONU improved to 13-0-2, 3-0-1 in conference.
After holding ONU scoreless in the first half, Heidelberg allowed a goal early in the second half. Brandon Homan crossed the ball in from the right side and Chris Garbig ran onto the loose ball and pushed it past HU goalkeeper Jake Kress.
Moments later, some nifty one-touch passing at the top of the penalty area afforded Alexis Mendoza with a chance at an equalizer. His shot narrowly missed the net beyond the outstretched hands of a diving Dean McNeil.
A foul just outside of the penalty area gave ONU a restart in the 60th minute. Jimmy Walkinshaw curled the free kick over the wall and into the upper 90 past Kress.
With Heidelberg in an all-out attack mode, the final ONU goal came in the 85th minute on a counterattack. Matt Kinkopf scored on a feed from David Janusz and Tommy Troy.
The Polar Bears held a 17-10 edge in shots. Kress finished with five saves.
Heidelberg returns to action for a mid-afternoon matinee on Saturday at Otterbein. Gametime is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
