Men's Soccer falls to #9 Kenyon

Box Score

GAMBIER – The Heidelberg University men's soccer team dropped their first match of the season on Sunday, falling to Kenyon College. The Student Princes had a few chances right out of the gate, but the 9th-ranked Lords were able to withstand the attack and eventually broke through, pulling away in the second half for the 4-0 win.

FIRST HALF

The Student Princes got off to a fast start, and a foul by Kenyon just outside of the box gave the Berg an early chance. Greg Raimondo's shot off the free kick was blocked, but Jay Sato found an open lane for a shot, but it went just wide of the frame.

In the 12th minute, Heidelberg had another great opportunity when Kurt Wilhelm played a through ball to Chris Koczak. Koczak's shot was deflected by the keeper for the save, and Wilhelm's attempt at a shot off the rebound was misplayed as the Lords escaped the danger.

Kenyon's first shot on goal came in the 24th minute. A foul just about 10 yards outside the top of the box by Heidelberg gave the Lords a chance, but the free kick was saved by Alex Archambeau.

Shortly thereafter, the Lords found another good opportunity on a cross into the box, but the shot was high as the match remained scoreless.

In the 24th minute, the Lords broke through for the match's first goal when Tony Amolo scored on a header off a cross into the box.

Kenyon (3-0) extended their lead in the 34th minute when a rocket from just outside the box found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

The Lords were able to create a few more chances in the remainder of the period, but the Heidelberg defense was able to stand tall and hold the two-goal deficit into the break.

SECOND HALF

In the 52nd minute, Kenyon found themselves with another great chance when the Berg was called for a foul just inches outside of the box. The free kick was high, however, as the score remained 2-0.

Heidelberg's deficit grew in the 56th minute when the Lords broke through yet again, making it a three-goal lead for the hosts.

Tony Amolo scored his second goal of the match in the 62nd minute as the score moved to 4-0.

That score would hold to the end, as Heidelberg dropped their first match of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Kenyon out-shot Heidelberg 16-9 in the contest. After the quick start for the Berg, it was all Kenyon the rest of the way.

Both sides were called for one yellow card, as a scuffle between Kyle Simpson and Amolo in the first half resulted in a booking.

UP NEXT

The Student Princes (1-1-1) will return home on Wednesday, September 9th, for a night contest with crosstown foe Tiffin University. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Hoernemann Stadium.
