Men's Soccer plays to scoreless draw with WC

Box Score

WILMINGTON – The Heidelberg University men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday evening with a scoreless draw at Wilmington. The Student Princes were able to create more chances than the host Quakers, but they came up empty as the two sides battled to a tie on Halloween.

Heidelberg has earned the #4 seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament and will host a first round match on Tuesday.

KEY STATS

The Berg out-shot Wilmington 20-10 in the match and also had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks in a contest that they had the majority of control, but settled for the draw.

Andres Isea led the HU offense with four shots, including two on goal.

Alex Archambeau picked up his third shutout of the season with the scoreless draw. The junior made four saves in the match as his defense helped him keep the Quakers off of the scoreboard.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Heidelberg had the majority of the possession in the first half, getting a 9-3 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, but they came up scoreless heading into the break. Despite that edge in shots, Wilmington had two shots on goal compared to just one by the Berg in the first half.

The second half was much more even, as the Berg only managed five shots in the half compared to two by the Quakers. Things got more physical as the game wore on, as there were 26 combined fouls in the second half compared to just 12 in the first half. Neither team was able to break through, sending the match to overtime.

Both teams were able to get at least one shot on goal in the first overtime period, but in the second, neither put a shot on frame as the match ended in a scoreless tie.

QUOTES

Head coach Ryan Carruth on the match: "We played some great soccer tonight and were unlucky not to score a couple of goals. Credit to Wilmington who battled hard until the final whistle. I am very proud of the effort and determination of our guys. They left it on the field."

Carruth on the team's development: "Our players are really starting to enjoy playing the game our way. Throughout the season we have expanded and refined our philosophy of looking to be the dominant team with pro active possession of the ball. I had so much fun watching tonight. The performance was excellent - minus a goal or two of course. But I can rest easy when we play like we did tonight because I know goals are coming."

Carruth on looking forward to the postseason: "We are flying high heading into the OAC tournament. We believe we can compete with anyone and can hardly wait to kick off at home on Tuesday against Marietta."
