Box Score BEXLEY – The Heidelberg men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match on the road on Wednesday, as Capital scored a pair of header goals to earn the victory. Despite a fairly even match in terms of possession and shots, the Berg was unable to break through on offense as they were defeated by the Crusaders.
KEY STATS
Each team recorded 10 shots in the match, with Capital having a slight 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Heidelberg had a number of chances off of set pieces, as they had seven corner kicks compared to just one for the Crusaders.
FIRST HALF
It was back-and-forth early on until the host Crusaders made the first strike. In the 17th minute, a free kick was taken by Capital near midfield and was bent across the box from right to left and put into the net off a header by Josh Spaw, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Heidelberg did have their fair share of chances in response, however. In the 32nd minute, Capital gave away the ball in their own half of the field, allowing Ryan Homoki a free path towards the goal. His shot went just wide though, as the Berg continued to trail by one.
That score held until the break as the Student Princes trailed by one despite holding an 8-7 edge in shots.
SECOND HALF
Capital turned that one goal lead into two quickly into the second half, as a header goal off a free kick made it a 2-0 game in the 51st minute.
In the 68th minute, Porus Shroff had a good chance off a free kick just outside of the box, but his shot that was bent on goal was stopped on a diving save by the Capital keeper.
Heidelberg was unable to battle back as the match concluded with a 2-0 score in favor of Capital.
QUOTES
Head coach Ryan Carruth on the match: "After a slow start I was proud of the way we got ourselves going later in the first half and into the second half. It wasn't always pretty, but that's how it can go late in October sometimes. I thought we defended well and limited Capital's ability to create chances in the run of play, but if you concede goals off of free kicks this can be one of those things that comes back to get you. We had our chances too and were unfortunate not to find the back of the net."
Carruth on moving forward to close out the regular season: "Our young group is growing stronger every day and we are excited about our next challenge at Wilmington on Saturday."
