Men's Soccer battles to draw with Marietta

Box Score

TIFFIN—The Heidelberg University men's soccer team battled in a hard-fought match with visiting Marietta College at Hidden Valley on Saturday. Despite serving up 18 shots, the Berg was unable to score more than once in the draw. The Student Princes move to 6-7-4, 4-2-1 in the OAC. The Pioneers are now 8-8-1, 3-3-1 in the OAC.

It was Senior Day as Heidelberg celebrated the contributions of Jacob Hetrick, Ryan Homoki, Chris Koczak, Mitchell Papst, Kyle Simpson, and Kurt Wilhelm.

FIRST HALF

The Berg got off to a strong start and maintained possession for most of the period. The Student Princes had many opportunities early in the half, but were unable to capitalize. Junior Greg Raimondo put the Berg on the board in the 18th minute. Raimondo launched a free kick that deflected off a Marietta defender and into the goal.

Heidelberg kept the pressure on the Pioneers, firing ten shots in the first half. Goalkeeper Jake Kress made three saves to keep Marietta scoreless.

SECOND HALF

Both teams had goal opportunities in the period. Marietta had the slight edge in shots on goal with seven to Heidelberg's six. The Pioneers were unable to find the equalizer until the 84th minute. Marietta's Taylor Reasoner dribbled through the Heidelberg defense and scored on a shot to the lower left corner.

OVERTIME

Heidelberg fired two shots, one on goal in the first overtime period, but could not find the golden goal. Marietta served up one shot in each overtime period, but neither on goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Things got chippy at Hidden Valley, with eight total yellow cards being issued throughout the game. Each team was flagged for four cautions. There were 17 fouls called on the Berg and seven on Marietta.

The Tricolor launched 18 shots during the game, ten on goal. The Marietta keeper made nine saves in the match. The Pioneers also had a busy day offensively, taking fourteen shots. Only four of those were on goal as Kress made three saves.

QUOTES

Head coach Ryan Carruth on the start of the game: "I thought that we started the game very well and created 3-4 full chances in the first twenty minutes. We need to finish those chances and this game is very different."

Carruth on the finish of the match and moving forward: "After we scored the first goal, we got away from playing our way and slipped out of our rhythm. Our guys were way too casual and complacent. As the game went along we didn't do a great job of anticipating and pressing collectively in key moments. So we've got to be better - less individualism and more cohesiveness. Credit to Marietta for battling hard, but we are disappointed not to take full points today."

UP NEXT

The Student Princes will travel to Capital on Wednesday to take on the Crusaders. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
