Men's Soccer runs over Muskingum 4-0

Box Score

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University men's soccer team won their second-straight OAC match on Saturday as they defeated Muskingum 4-0. The Student Princes were in command throughout, as 22 players saw action in the rout of the visiting Muskies.

KEY STATS

Heidelberg had a well spread-out attack on the day, as they had four different goal-scorers and 10 different players that recorded at least one shot.

Alex Archambeau picked up the clean sheet in the match, his second of the season and first since the season-opening victory over Adrian. The defense in front of him did a tremendous job in the match as Archambeau only had to make two saves on the afternoon.

Chris Koczak netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute. The goal was his 8th of the season, which leads the Student Princes.

FIRST HALF

After taking control of possession early on, Heidelberg was able to get on the scoreboard when Koczak beat the keeper off an assist by Porus Shroff in the 22nd minute. Koczak pulled in the cross from Shroff, made a few touches and drilled the ball into the lower 90 to give the Berg the 1-0 lead.

Heidelberg continued to press forward throughout the half, but they were unable to extend their lead entering halftime. The Berg held their 1-0 lead at the break and had an 11-1 edge in shots for the period.

SECOND HALF

The Student Princes were able to extend their lead early in the second half. Kyle Simpson was able to find space in the box and drilled a shot that went off the post, then off the keeper's back, and then into the goal for his first of the season.

Heidelberg (4-6-3, 2-1 OAC) continued to add to their lead in the 59th minute off a corner kick. Andres Isea played the ball into the box, and Kyle Boone got his head on it at the back post and made it a 3-0 lead for the Berg.

With the game well in hand, a large group of reserves saw action late for Heidelberg, and they made the post of it in the 80th minute. Kris Priddy crossed a ball into the box that was finished out of the air by Behnam Alinejad for his first collegiate goal and a 4-0 lead for the Student Princes.

That lead held till the end as Heidelberg finished off the shutout to improve to 2-1 in conference action.

QUOTES

Head coach Ryan Carruth on the win: "It was a good team result. I don't think it was our best performance, but we definitely had some bright spots today and some good moments. We're still hungry and striving for a 90-minute performance. We're getting closer and closer, but still not there."

Carruth on the defense getting a shutout: "I thought at the back line we defended really well today, but overall I think there's room for improvement in every aspect of our game."

UP NEXT

Heidelberg will travel to John Carroll for a rematch of last year's OAC championship match, which the Berg won 5-4. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in University Heights.
