Seniors lead men's soccer to win in opener

Box Score

ALBION, Michigan – Dr. Brian Haley's send-off season started with a bang.

A pair of goals by senior Hamid Shariff sent the Heidelberg University men's soccer team to a 2-0 season-opening win over Albion College on Friday. Shariff's classmate Matthew Stevens kept a clean sheet in goal, stopping all five shots fired by the Britons.

Haley, who announced his plans to step down as head coach after the season, picked up his 229th career win.

The Student Princes opened scoring in the 29th minute as Nico Samaniego assisted on Shariff's first goal.

Shariff, the reigning OAC midfielder of the year, found the back of the net again in the 39th minute off of a feed from Kurt Wilhelm. Shariff has 14 goals in his career.

"Overall, we put in good work and played well in parts," said Haley, in his 26th season. "It's always a tough time to win a season opener on the road."

Heidelberg will return to Michigan on Saturday for a showdown at Adrian College. The Student Princes and the Bulldogs are slated for a 4 p.m. start
