Season ends in NCAA tournament for men's soccer

Box Score

GAMBIER – The magical run for the Heidelberg University men's soccer team and head coach Brian Haley, in his final season, came to a close on Saturday when they were unable to keep up with the Kenyon Lords on a chilly morning. The Student Princes had their share of chances, but failed to keep up with the vicious attack by Kenyon, as they fell by a final score of 3-0.

The match opened up with both teams trading shots with the first shot on goal coming in the 11th minute by Chris Koczak, but the keeper made the save.

The Lords would then start to take over possession, and it turned into offense when Dalton Eudy found the back of the net in the 20th minute to take the 1-0 lead over the Berg.

Kenyon would continue to push forward again, scoring less than five minutes later off of a header in the box, pushing their lead to two. Heidelberg was unable to muster up any sort of counter in the remainder of the period, as they entered halftime down 2-0.

The second half would turn out to be much more of a defensive battle, as the Student Prince defense bent, but did not break. Matthew Stevens made a number of impressive saves to keep the Berg in the match, holding the deficit at two.

In the 62nd minute, the Student Princes took a blow when senior midfield Hamid Shariff was forced to come out due to an injury, but they continued to battle.

Heidelberg got off a pair of shots in the 84th and 89th minute by Kyle Boone and Alexis Mendoze, but the Kenyon Keeper made the saves.

The Lords made a quick counter at the end of the match and tacked on a goal in the 90th minute, pushing the score to 3-0, which would hold up for the final.

"It's tough to lose any game. But you've just got to say great year. Fantastic, historical year. Congratulations, we've had so many great memories along the way here on this journey" said head coach Brian Haley after coaching his final game for Heidelberg. "So congratulations to them, I'm proud of them and proud to be their coach. I look forward to watching them in the future"

Kenyon out-shot the Berg 20-10 on the afternoon including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lords' attack could be seen by their 11 offside calls during the match.

Stevens made a valiant effort in goal for Heidelberg on the day, making six saves in the match.

The Student Princes end the season with a 13-7-3 record, making their first trip to the NCAA tournament in school history. Kenyon will move on to the next round, facing the winner of Thomas More and North Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
