Box Score TIFFIN – Nearing the end of the regular season, the Heidelberg University volleyball team is playing the best they have all season, and that is not good news for opponents. Today, the foe was Case Western Reserve, and the Berg dominated throughout, going on to win in straight sets for the third consecutive match.
The match opened up with Case scoring first, and holding a 3-2 advantage, but that would be the last time on the day they would have a lead in any set, as Heidelberg then rolled out to an 11-3 and did not look back.
The second set was controlled from Heidelberg right away, as they jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. It did not take much from there for the Berg, as they rolled to another 25-14 set victory.
Case (15-10, 4-3 UAA) showed more fight in the third set, as they rattled off five consecutive points to pull within one, 12-13, but that would be too little, too late, as Heidelberg pulled away from there, finishing off the sweep with a 25-19 victory in set three.
As a team, Heidelberg recorded a .361 hitting percentage, compared to just .141 for the Spartans.
Jamie Kluding led the way for Heidelberg's offense, drilling 14 kills with a .429 hitting percentage, while Sarah Parker and Janessa Scott recorded 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Stephanie Romie had a solid all-around match, picking up six kills with a .750 hitting percentage, while also leading the team in assists with 34. Jubilee Haase led the defense with 15 digs.
"When we come out and grab some momentum early, the kids just relax and are able to play volleyball" said head coach Jason Miller. "The game plan was coming out and trying to push the pace offensively and trying to put them [Case] in tight situations early, and I thought we did that. We've been getting some consistent play from everyone, and that's been the biggest difference for us. There was a little bit in that third set where Case made a push and the kids just responded and pushed through. Right now, I'm pretty excited about where we are and I'm ready for the next match."
With the win, Heidelberg improved to 17-11 on the season and will wrap up the regular season with a pair of conference matches, both at home. The next match will be against Capital this Tuesday, October 28. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
