The Heidelberg University men's soccer team began the 2013 season with a thrilling 2-1 home victory over the Fighting Scots from the College of Wooster.

The Student Princes got out to an early lead when sophomore and leading goal scorer from a season ago, Chris Koczak netted the first Berg goal. Koczak gained possession from a Ryan Homoki pass just outside of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot that deflected off of the left post and in.

Koczak would finish the contest with four total shots, three of which were on goal.

With a 1-0 lead in the third minute, the Berg stayed on the offensive, constantly pushing into Wooster's defensive third.

In the 13th minute, junior midfielder Hamid Shariff found the back of the net for the second Heidelberg goal of the evening. Shariff received the ball from another well placed Homoki pass and sent it sailing over the goalkeeper's head into the back of the twine. He would finish the evening with three shots.

The lone Wooster goal came from George Skelly in the 25th minute when he booted a shot passed Heidelberg keeper Matthew Stevens into the left upper 90.

Stevens picks up the first victory of his junior season against the Scots but recorded no saves on the evening. The Heidelberg defensive unit held Wooster to just four shots, only one of which was on target.

With under a minute to play in the game, Wooster was awarded a corner kick, which caused them to pull up their goalkeeper, Aaron McKee. However, the corner kick from Wooster's CJ Polak missed the mark and found the foot of senior defender Erik Furst. The Student Prince beat three would-be defenders while running the length of the pitch on his way toward the Wooster goal. Unfortunately he was stopped short of scoring with a heroic diving save from McKee as time expired.

The Student Princes will rest Saturday and return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as they play host to the Yeomen of Oberlin College. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. from the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex in Tiffin, Ohio.
