Two Penalty Kicks Propel Men's Soccer to 3-1 Win Over Terriers

Box Score

Junior midfielder Hamid Shariff has had a rough go in 2013 after suffering an injury earlier in the season and missing the last few contests. However, against the Terriers of Hiram College, Shariff was back in good form as he knocked in two penalty kicks for the Berg sending them to a 3-1 victory. "I thought we could have played better but at the end of the day we got the result we wanted," said 25-year head coach Dr. Brian Haley. "We dug it out and did what we needed to do, which was win."

Down 1-0 in the 19th minute, Shariff stepped up to take the first Heidelberg penalty kick of the afternoon. Shariff knocked home the PK to bring the Student Princes to a tie with Hiram.

The remainder of the first half would pass by without a goal from either side. In the 62nd minute, the Berg was awarded another penalty kick following a Hiram foul in the box. Shariff took the penalty kick again and once more banged it into the twine for the second Berg goal of the game and his third goal of the 2013 campaign.

Hamid finished the match with three shots against the Terriers with two of them on goal. He has tallied seven shots this season and has accumulated six points thus far. Shariff's three goals on the season puts him at a tie with sophomore Chris Koczak and freshman Greg Raimondo for top scoring honors on the team.

The goal that put the game out of reach for the Terriers came in the 84th minute from sophomore Ryan Homoki. The Berg was on a counter attack and broke out of their defensive third with the ball at the feet of junior Nico Samaneigo. On the counter attack, Samaneigo found Homoki on a break away, which set him up for his first goal of the 2013 season.

Samaneigo claimed his second assist of the season on the Homoki goal.

Keeper Matthew Stevens had a fairly uncontested day in goal as the Berg defense held the Terriers to three shots on goal. Stevens collected two saves against Hiram putting his season total at 20. Stevens currently holds a save percentage of .741 following the victory over the Terriers.

The lone goal for the Terriers came from Richard Webb.

The Heidelberg men move to 4-1-0 overall and remain unbeaten in Tiffin in 2013.

In preparation for their next contest on Saturday Haley explained, "we will look at what we need to do, but the good thing is we are starting to get players back that have been out with injuries. As we begin to get our full squad back, we will begin firing on all cylinders," said Haley.

"I see a lot of potential in this group and if we can keep the focus I think that we will be a lot better then what we showed tonight," Haley added.

The Student Princes will continue the non conference portion of their schedule when they host Denison on Saturday, September 21. Kickoff from the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex is slated for 2:00 p.m.
