Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg volleyball team swept the Capital Crusaders in straight sets, 3-0 to advance to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals where they will battle the Polar Bear of Ohio Northern in Alliance on Friday, November 8.
After the Student Princes beat Capital, 3-1 in the regular season, the Berg down the Crusaders methodically by a score of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17 to advance to the semifinals.
"We studied film, defensively we made some adjustment because of some of the things they do, but the big thing was that we got more aggressive on our serve and that helped us out a lot tonight," said 14 year head coach Jason Miller.
"We definitely kept them out of system more then they wanted to be because of our serve and that was a nice thing considering we have not been that aggressive this year on our serves so it was nice to be aggressive and not make a ton of service errors," concluded Miller.
The Student Princes were led offensively by senior Amber Welfle who tallied a game-high 14 kills followed by freshman Sarah Parker and sophomore Jamie Kluding who collected ten kills each.
Senior Alexa Frank led the Berg in assists with 21 followed by junior Stephanie Romie's 18.
"Amber and Alexa have been great leaders for us on and off the court," said Miller. "As a coach you can't ask for two better quality young adults. It is what they do off the court and the role models they are towards the team that is truly their major impact to the team."
Defensively, the Berg was led by the efforts of junior Grace Samenuk who recorded ten digs against the Crusaders, followed by junior Jubilee Haase and Frank who tallied six each.
The Student Princes will battle the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. from Alliance, Ohio as the number one seeded Mount Union Purple Raiders play host to semifinals and finals action.
"We went five sets with Ohio Northern twice and split with them. We won one game, they won one game and we know it will be a battle," concluded Miller.
