Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg volleyball team already clinched at least a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship heading into their match against the Mount Union Purple Raiders. The Purple Raiders needed a victory over the Berg to force a tie in the regular season standings and they found it this afternoon as the Berg fell, 3-1.
Both squads finish the OAC regular season at 8-1 to share the title.
The 2013 regular season championship marks the fifth in program history and the fourth of head coach Jason Miller's career.
The Student Princes fell behind early as they dropped the first set, 19-25 before picking up the second set, 25-19. The Purple Raiders took down the Berg in the third set 25-15 before narrowly escaping the fourth set, 25-23.
The Student Princes celebrated the careers of their two seniors, Alexa Frank and Amber Welfle during the pre-game. The two will leave the Berg after the completion of the 2013 season and take the lessons they have learned on the court into their professional careers.
Welfle has another stellar day against the Purple Raiders as she finished with a team-high 12 kills and 12 digs in the loss.
Behind Amber offensively, was junior Sarah Botts who recorded 10 kills against Mount Union. Botts effort was followed by Sarah Parker's seven kills and Jamie Kluding's six. Kluding also finished with 12 digs in the loss.
Setting up the Berg offense all afternoon was Frank who finished the day with 21 assists while junior Stephanie Romie tallied 11 assists.
Junior Grace Samenuk played libero for the Student Princes and finished with a team-high 13 digs.
The Student Princes will now host the Crusaders of Capital University on Tuesday, November 4 in Ohio Athletic Tournament quarterfinal action. Start time for the Student Princes and Crusaders is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
