Box Score TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University volleyball team won its seventh straight match, defeating Capital University 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20) on Wednesday.
"This team keeps figuring out a way to win," said head coach Jason Miller. "Fortunately or unfortunately, that's what this team's mojo is."
Heidelberg (11-9, 3-0 OAC) took the first set with an attack percentage of .344. The Student Princes used a five-point run to take an 18-13 lead, but the Crusaders battled back. Capital (12-11, 0-3 OAC) rallied to cut the score to 19-18, prompting a timeout from Miller. His troops responded with a 6-1 run to close the set.
In the second set, the Student Princes trailed 10-4 but rallied to tie the match at 14. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth affair, with Capital emerging victorious.
The third set was dominated by the Student Princes. Capital was held to a -.027 attack percentage. With an 11-10 lead, Heidelberg broke out with a 14-4 run to take the set.
The Student Princes closed out the match with a win in the tight fourth set. Miller took a timeout with his team clinging to a 19-18 lead. Again, the team responded, this time with a 6-2 run to win.
Amber Welfle had a game-high 16 kills and added 11 digs. Sarah Parker recorded 15 kills and four blocks.
"I thought Parker carried us for the first couple of sets," said Miller. "Sarah Botts provided a nice spark down the stretch." Botts finished with seven kills.
Alexa Frank had 30 assists.
Defensively, Megan Mills and Grace Samenuk notched 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Heidelberg takes their win streak on the road to the Midwest Volleyball Challenge, hosted by Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Student Princes square off with Chicago and Bethany on Friday, Clarkson and Elmhurst on Saturday.
