Men's soccer outshoots Marietta to victory

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Heidelberg men dominated the shot count against the Pioneers of Marietta College, out shooting the Pioneers, 17-3 in 90 minutes. However, it only took one of those shots to separate the two squads as the Berg men hand the Pioneers their first Ohio Athletic Conference loss, 1-0.

The Heidelberg men took seven shots in the first half compared to the Pioneers's one, but the back of the net eluded them.

The Student Princes found their only goal of the contest in the 52nd minute when sophomore forward Chris Koczak scored his fourth goal of the season.

Junior Hamid Shariff played a wonderful long pass into Koczak who footed the ball outside of the 18-yard box. Koczak, with the ball at his feet, beat the would-be Marietta defender, and lobbed a shot over the Pioneer goalkeeper.

The goal puts Koczak in a tie with Shariff for top goal scorer.

The Berg took ten shots in the second half compared to Marietta's two. Heidelberg's junior keeper Matthew Stevens fended off just two Pioneer shots, which both came in the second half.

Stevens now owns 37 saves in his junior season.

The Heidelberg men will return to action when they battle the Wilmington Quakers on Wednesday, October 9. Kickoff from Wilmington, Ohio is slated for 7:00 p.m.
