Late Goals From the Polar Bears Equals Disaster for Men's Soccer

Box Score

ADA, Ohio - The Heidelberg men's soccer team traveled to Ohio Northern University to battle the Polar Bears in Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The Berg took a 2-0 lead into half but four second half goals and a fifth in overtime sent the Polar Bears to a 5-4 win.

Entering their match with the Polar Bears, the Berg and their opponents haven't combined for nine goals in their last five contest.

Redemption was on the minds of the Student Princes and with the score 2-0 in Heidelberg's favor at the half, it seemed to be all Berg. Leading goal scorer Chris Koczak netted the first Berg goal of the evening in the 24th minute followed by sophomore defender Andy Lacefield's first goal of the 2013 season in the 32nd minute.

The Polar Bears began to claw back in the 50th minute when Keegan Ross knocked a deflection into the twine. Koczak scored his ninth of the season in the 54th minute to send the Berg ahead 3-1. Ohio Northern tallied their second goal of the game in the 56th minute which the Berg responded to when Ryan Homoki knocked through the fourth Heidelberg goal in the 65th.

The Polar Bears scored two unanswered goals in the closing 25 minutes to send the game into overtime with the equalizer coming in the 84th.

Slightly over four and a half minutes into the first overtime period is when Ohio Northern found the game winning goal after being awarded a corner kick. ONU's Stephen Perkins headed the set piece passed junior goalkeeper Matthew Stevens to end the game and finish with a hat trick.

Stevens stopped five shots all evening sending his season total to 54 saves.

Offensively, Heidelberg was led by Chris Koczak who tallied two of the Berg's four goals on eight shots. Freshman Kyle Simpson finished behind Koczak offensively with three shots followed by fellow Kyle, Kyle Boone who recorded two shots.

Junior Hamid Shariff added to his assist total with two against the Polar Bears pulling his season total up to a team-high five. Homoki's goal marks the fourth of his sophomore campaign.

Following the heartbreaking loss, the Berg men move to 9-5 overall and an even 3-3 in the OAC with three regular season conference matches left on the schedule.

The Student Princes will host the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum University on Saturday, October, 26. The Heidelberg men and women's soccer teams will be celebrating Senior Day from the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex where kickoff for the men's game is slated for 3:30 p.m. with the women set to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
