GENEVA, Ohio -- For the third year in a row, a Heidelberg University hammer thrower earned a spot on the podium at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Tristen Durr, a junior from Newcomerstown, placed sixth in the event with a throw of 187-7.
Throwing in the first flight, Durr's best throw came on his second attempt. He becomes the 19th individual to garner All-American honors at the outdoor championships.
Gage Falcone, the school record holder in the hammer, earned All-American honors in 2015. Madison Haasz was an outdoor All-American on the women's side in 2015 and 2016.
"Tristan matured a lot as a thrower this year and really took it personal after not qualifying indoor," said third-year head coach Joe Yoder. "Coach [Nick] Green and Tristan put in a ton of work this offseason and outdoor season, going undefeated in D3 competition this regular season."
Durr finished one centimeter ahead of Farmingdale State's Jyaire Ewa. Marckus Simmons (Augustana) won with a throw of 202-01.
"Both Tristan and Coach Green definitely earned every bit of this," said Yoder.
Earlier on the weekend, Wes Fritz finished 14th in the high jump. Kenny Beucler (400 Hurdles) and the 4x400m Relay Team (Beucler, Devaun Churchya, Dan Stoll, and Jerrod Lyon) were unable to qualify for the finals.
The meet, hosted by Mount Union at the SPIRE Institute, was won by Wisconsin La Crosse.
