MLAX: Comeback falls short at Wilmington

WILMINGTON -- A late comeback came up short for the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team on Friday evening. The Berg fell at Wilmington College, 10-9, scoring three times in the fourth quarter.

HU slips to 7-7, 1-5 as Wilmington improves to 5-7, 2-4.

Senior Matt Wernerspach scored four goals for the Berg. Sophomore Patrick McCarthy chipped in with three goals.

Late in the second, the Quakers took a slim 6-4 lead. Wernerspach scored twice, in a 72 second span, to even the game at six headed into halftime.

Four straight Quaker goals gave the home team a 10-6 lead with one quarter to play.

Sophomore Hunter Edwards found Nick Selfridge less than two minutes into the fourth. The Student Princes capitalized on a man-up opportunity with McCarthy's third goal of the day.

With 1:40 on the clock, Wernerspach buried his fourth goal of the afternoon. The Student Princes took many shots on goal, trying to find the equalizer, but could not connect.

Edwards led the defense, causing a game-high five turnovers. The sophomore midfielder registered two assists as well.

Freshman goalie Alex Bruder made eight saves in the loss. Wilmington's Jake Ladendorf recorded 28 saves in the match.

Heidelberg hosts Capital on Apr. 21 for 1 p.m. matchup. The game marks senior day for HU's lone senior, Wernerspach.
