MBB: Berg stuns No. 22 Marietta
  • Heidelberg rallies from 15-point deficit to beat No. 22 Marietta
  • Moxley with 19, Prewitt with 18, Mason with 14
  • First win over Pioneers since 2010-11 season

MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team picked up an emotional 71-65 victory on the road at No. 22 Marietta College. The win, head coach Andy Bucheit's first over his former employer, was critical for the Student Princes as they hunt for a berth into the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.

Chris Moxley had a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds in a reserve role. Mike Mason also came off the bench and had a major impact against his former team with 14 points and seven rebounds. Myron Prewitt added 18 points and five boards.

Heidelberg improved to 9-12 overall, 5-9 in the OAC. The Pioneers dropped to 16-5, 10-4.

The win is The Berg's third over a Top-25 team this season. HU beat then-No. 12 North Central in November and then-No. 24 Baldwin Wallace in January.

"We showed some real toughness tonight. Being down 13 at half our guys stepped up and made the adjustments on the defensive end to secure a great road win," said Bucheit. "Our young men have been through a lot this season. They have stayed the course and we are so proud of them."

The hosts took an early 17-8 lead, which prompted a timeout by Heidelberg head coach Andy Bucheit. The Berg scored the first four points after the rest, but their momentum was short-lived. The Pioneers would build their lead to as many as 14, before taking a 42-29 lead into halftime.

And, as they have all year, the Student Princes fought back.

The rally started with a 7-0 run early in the second half, which drew a timeout by the hosts. Later, with his team down nine, senior Chris Moxley scored seven-straight points. With 10 minutes to play, HU trailed 53-51.

With under three minutes left, James Hanley hit a put-back layup, giving the Tricolor a 63-62 lead. Two free throws by Prewitt and a another put-back layup -- this time by Mason -- put HU up 67-63 with 2:11 to play.

Down two with a chance to tie, the Pioneers missed on a contested jumper and Josh Dixon grabbed the board with 47 seconds left. After a timeout, HU fed big Mike Mason on the block for a bucket.

Devaughn Wingard missed two 3-pointers in a frantic final 15 seconds before Kiere Bennie was able to corral a rebound. He sealed the game with two free throws.

With the win, Heidelberg snapped a string of 16 consecutive losses to Marietta, which dates back to the 2010-11 season.

"Our guys deserve every bit of this win," said Bucheit. "Lesser people would have quit ... but not our team. I'm just so proud of them and so happy for our seniors."

Heidelberg will host Ohio Northern (15-6, 10-4) on Wednesday. The Student Princes beat the Polar Bears. 84-80, in mid-January. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
