TIFFIN – Two Heidelberg University student-athletes were honored with Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards. Football tailback Montavious Yearby and volleyball libero Nicole Thomas were recognized for their respective performances during the opening weekend of the season.

Thomas, a senior from Galion, surpassed the 1000-dig milestone while helping guide the Student Princes to a 5-1 start to the season at the Great Lakes Crossover.

Thomas joined the 1000-dig club against Carroll University in game three on friday where she totaled 26 digs helping HU take the match 3-2 over the Pioneers. On the weekend, she tallied 136 digs and 22 service aces.

Thomas is now 232 digs away from cracking the top ten for all-time digs in a career.

In 'Berg football's dominant 68-14 win over Hiram, Yearby tied the school record for most touchdowns in a game with five while rushing for 126 yards

Yearby's first touchdown of the game came on the first drive when he scampered in for an eight-yard run to put Heidelberg up 6-0. Touchdown number five happened shortly after halftime as Yearby broke loose for a 59-yard run to help increase the HU lead to 41-7.

The two-time first team All-OAC award winner is no stranger to the record book. He currently sits fifth all time in school history in rushing attempts (575) and rushing yards (3,680).

Following Yearby's five touchdown performance, he now moves to third all-time in rushing touchdowns with 37, just eight back from the second spot held by Walter Livingston.

Heidelberg is currently 1-0 (0-0 OAC) on the year and is on a bye this weekend. Their next game will come on September 16th as they take on OAC rival Ohio Northern in Ada.

The volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Defiance College in Seiberling Gymnasium for their first home match of the season. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
