WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Highlighted by a title at 285 by
Jace Grossman, the Heidelberg University wrestling team finished second at the Waynesburg Invitational. In all, nine 'Berg wrestlers placed in the top six.
"What a fantastic way to start out the new year," said Head Coach
Tony Patrizi. "We got back to basic techniques in the room this week. It was a great effort, top to bottom."
Grossman was dominant on Saturday. He pinned Daniel Eckley (Del. Valley) in third period, then stuck Trent Patrick (Waynesburg) in the first. After a 10-4 win over Hank Behnaegel (Johns Hopkins) in the semifinals, Grossman advanced to the finals. There, he capped off his superb day with a third-period pin of Rocky McGeary (Waynesburg).
Jacob Horsch, the
reigning OAC Scholar Athlete of the Month, was the runner up at 149. He began with a pin of Nicholas Reeping (W&J) in 2:42, then beat Mitchell Freeman (Rio Grande), 6-4. In the semis, he beat Adam Zerbee (W&J), 7-2. Greg Croce (Del. Valley) nipped Horsch in the finals, 7-5.
Heidelberg had a trio earn third place finishes --
Carson Pottenger,
Montavious Yearby and
Adam Medeiros.
At 157, Pottenger started with a pin of Calvin Cai (Case) in 4:17. After being tripped up in the next round, he responded with a pair of wins in the consolations. He majored Seth Evans (Waynesburg), 12-0, then pinned Adam Coleman (Del. Valley).
Yearby lost his opener at 165, but reeled off four straight wins. The first two victories came via pins over guys named David -- Emch (Cleary) in 3:39 and Mundey (Fairmont St.) in 1:12. A medical forfeit pushed Yearby into the third-place match, where he emerged with a 13-1 major decision against Christopher Richardson (Del. Valley).
Medeiros pinned Nick Funovits (W&J) and outlasted Aidan Gassel (Case), 15-11, to open at 184. In the consolations following a 9-6 loss, he regained momentum with a pin of Elliott Lee (2:00). Wrestling for third, he majored Gassel this time -- winning 18-7.
Brandon D'Egidio went 4-2 with two pins at 133 and
Jamen Onesky was 5-2 with a pin at 149. Both finished fourth.
Cole Reiner went 2-2 at 125, taking fifth. Josh Gibson took sixth, going 3-3 on the afternoon.
Heidelberg will return to action at next weekend's Spartan Mat Classic in North Manchester, Indiana.
