NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- In one of the toughest tournaments across Division III,
Jace Grossman and T.J. Rhamy led the Heidelberg University wrestling team at the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational. Grossman was third at 285 and Rhamy was fifth at 174.
"Pete Willson is an extremely difficult tournament, and we saw a great effort from both T.J. and Jace," said Head Coach
Tony Patrizi. "It was an opportunity to see where we stand and what we can improve upon. I am looking forward to getting back to work this week."
Heidelberg has placed two at the Willson Invitational for the third straight trip. In 2020,
Dylan Roth was second and
Harrison Hadley was sixth. The year prior, Roth won and Tyler Hammack was fourth.
Grossman's trek through the field at 285 began with a first period pin over OAC foe Connor Bizjak (John Carroll). In the second round, Grossman led Gary Powell (Mount St. Joseph) 4-1 after the first, but staved off a second-period pin, yielding four back points. A reversal and four nearfall points of his own gave Grossman a 10-7 lead after two. The third period was all 'Berg, as Grossman escaped, had a takedown and four back points before pinning Powell.
In the quarterfinals, Grossman faced Cole Fibranz (Chicago). Trailing 6-5 to start the third, Grossman took the lead with an early reversal. A point for stalling and riding time pushed the final score to 9-6, and pushed Grossman into the semifinals.
Robby Bates (North Central) took the lead with a takedown in the first, but Grossman countered with a reversal. Later, tied at four, Bates tallied an escape and a takedown -- winning the semifinal matchup, 7-5.
Relegated to the consolations, Grossman advanced to the third-place match with a 5-0 shutout of Rayshawn Dixon (Ferrum). HU's 285er used a quick takedown to take an early lead. The other three points came via stalling, an escape and riding time. In the match for third, Grossman took control early with a takedown and two back points. Early in the second, he pinned Carter Urich (Messiah) to win the match -- his third pin of the weekend.
Rhamy used a third-period takedown to emerge with a 3-2 win over Dahson Dejong (Cornell) in the first round. In the second round, Rhamy faced John Sumner (Messiah) and took a 5-4 lead into a wild third period. Rhamy padded his lead with a takedown midway through the third, but allowed an escape. Sumner added two more takedowns, but was saddled with two stalling points. The third period ended in a 7-7 tie, but Rhamy's riding time point provided the final point in an 8-7 win.
An 8-4 loss in the quarterfinals to Cornell Beachem (Mount St. Joseph), the top-ranked wrestler at 174, sent Rhamy into the consolations. There, he picked up a 5-2 win over Trystan Altensy (Stevens Point) and a 3-2 victory over Joey Jens (North Central). After a loss, Rhamy claimed fifth place via medical forfeit.
Elsewhere,
Harrison Hadley and
Dwight Parker each picked up a pair of wins on Friday.
Nathan Demangeont,
Montavious Yearby and
Adam Medeiros all had one win in the tournament.
The Student Princes return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 8, when they host Baldwin Wallace for the final OAC dual of the season. Varsity action on the mat is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
