ADA, Ohio -- Three pins tipped the scales in favor of host Ohio Northern as the Heidelberg University wrestling team opened their dual schedule with a 24-15 setback. The Student Princes won five of the ten varsity bouts, including a thrilling win by
Adam Medeiros at 184.
At 125,
Harrison Hadley used an acrobatic move to register a first period takedown of Colin Mellott, then added on four backpoints. Up 6-0, Hadley only allowed an escape, and picked up three points for the Student Princes.
Nathan Demangeont lost a back-and-forth match at 133 and
Kyle Fanson fell at 141.
With his team down 9-3,
Dwight Parker muscled his way to a a 5-3 win over Matt Dewitz at 149.
Carson Pottenger tied the dual up at 157 with a 12-7 win over Antonio Gonzalez.
After a narrow loss by
Logan Germaine, reigning OAC Wrestler of the Year
Devin Miller tied the match with a 7-2 win over Schuyler Caprella at 174.
At 184,
Adam Medeiros and Gavin Layman seemed destined for overtime near the end of their evenly-matched bout. In the waning seconds, Medeiros scored a reversal and won the match 8-6. The win put HU up 15-12.
A pin by ONU's Cash Thompson put the Polar Bears up 15-12 heading into the 285 match. There, Heidelberg's
Gabriel Martinez appeared to slip on the mat in the second period. Ben DePrest seized the opportunity and secured the dual with a pin.
The Student Princes return to action after the Thanksgiving break. HU hosts Muskingum for Mustache Mania night at Seiberling Gymnasium.
