WHEATON, Illinois -- The Heidelberg University wrestling team concluded action at the Wheaton University Pete Willson Invitational on Saturday afternoon with two wrestlers securing podium finishes.
Senior, 184 pounder,
Dylan Roth took home second, while freshman, 125 pounder,
Harrison Hadley placed sixth.
As a team, The Berg finished 17th of 34 teams after registering 43 points. North Central won the team scoring with 120.5 points.
In the 184 championship-semis, Roth defeated Isaac Odell of the hosts, Wheaton via an 8-6 decision. Roth used two takedowns in the first, a two-point nearfall in the second period to garner a 6-3 lead heading into the final period. Choosing bottom, Roth eventually worked his way to a reversal. As time ticked away, Odell earned three points with an escape and a late takedown, by Roth had done enough to move on to the final bout.
Competing in his second-straight Pete Willson Invitational final, Roth suffered his first loss of the season and his first regular season loss since his freshman campaign with a 5-1 defeat to Cody Baldrige (North Central). Bald ridge seized control in the second period with an escape point and a takedown as the period expired. Roth got on the scoreboard with an escape early in the third, but Baldrige finished the match with another takedown. The loss placed Roth second overall.
In the 125 consolation-semis, Hadley was downed by Enzo Silva (North Central) by a final score of 3-2. Leading 1-0 after the second period, Hadley was whistled for two penalty points and allowed an escape in the third period to fall behind 3-1. A stalling point in his favor closed the gap, but time expired with Silva moving to the consolation finals and Hadley falling to the fifth place bout.
Hadley then placed sixth after suffering a loss to Denis Murphy of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Heidelberg will return to the mats on Thursday as they travel to Mt. St. Joseph for a non-conference dual at 7 p.m.
FROM FRIDAY:
125 -
Harrison Hadley was knocked to the consolation rounds with a 7-5 sudden victory loss to JD McMillin of Ferrum in the first round. A third period escape and takedown with two seconds remaining in the third allowed Hadley to force extra time, but McMillan's takedown with 11 seconds left in the extra period sent Hadley to the wrestle-backs.
Matched up with Jack Marley (UW-Eau Claire), Hadley advanced with a hard-fought 2-1 win. After allowing a second-period escape, Hadley trailed late in the third. With 40 seconds left, Hadley scored a reversal to take a 2-1 lead. Marley was unable to squirt free, leaving Hadley with the narrow win.
Hadley's next match had less of a flair for the dramatic. Facing Muskingum's Hunter Heck for the second time in less than a week, Hadley picked up a pin in 2:09 -- besting Heck in the fictitious "Battle for the H.H. Initials" once again.
Next, Hadley entered the third period down 4-3. He used a reversal to take the lead, then tacked on a point for riding time and beat Byron Fleming (Buena Vista), 6-4.
In his final bout on Friday, Hadley clinched a spot on the podium with a 4-3 win over Seth Hayes (Mt. Union). Hadley scored a takedown and added two back points in the second period. Starting down in the third, he nearly scored a reversal, but then yielded two back points. Hayes rode out Hadley the whole third period, but the riding time point proved inconsequential as the Heidelberg freshman advanced to Saturday.
133 -
David Ocasio was pinned by Devin West of MacMurray College, sending him to the consolation rounds early.
In the wrestlebacks, Ocasio muscled out a 7-2 win over Duncan Clayton (Case Western Reserve). Two reversals, a third-period takedown and a point for riding time keyed Ocasio's win.
His momentum was short-lived, as he fell in his next bout.
141 -
Jake Justice upended Eli Mondrella (UW-Osh Kosh) in his opening match, 8-6. Justice was down 4-0 in the first and trailed 6-2 with less than 35 seconds in the match. A takedown and four nearfall points yielded the victory.
After falling to Josh Lawson (Elmhurst), Justice emerged with another white-knuckle win in the consolations. Harry Marr (Elizabethtown) forced overtime with a late takedown. In the sudden victory period, the pair spent nearly the entire time grappling on the mat, fighting for an edge. In the end, Justice prevailed by pushing Marr's knee up and gaining control.
His day ended in the next match -- a loss to Cameron Lee (Millikin).
149 -
Slade Todd moved into the second round with a first-period pin over Jacob Williams of Otterbein. Todd's pin was the 12th of his season and second straight over Williams. Next, he lost to Nick Barnhart (Messiah), 10-5.
In the consolation bracket, he advanced with a second-period pin against Quinn Hoopman (Concordia - Wisc.). He bowed out of the tournament with a loss to Zachary Wells (Olivet).
157 -
Jacob Horsch was sent to the consolations after suffering a first-period loss via pin in the first round. Despite having the best hair in the gym, Horsch's day ended with a narrow 5-3 loss to Kerington Martin (Defiance).
165 -
Devin Miller found his way to the consolation bracket with a first round loss to Derick Duvall of Adrian. There, he knocked off Galilee Kissell (Ferrum), 13-6, relentlessly attacking his opponent.
Miller's run ended with a 4-3 loss to Willy Plaisir (Otterbein). Plaisir got up 4-0, then did everything he could to avoid a late takedown.
174 -
Jeremiah Slagle breezed his way to a 15-0 tech fall win over Otterbein's Joey Bradberry in the first round. Ahead by 14 after the first period, Slagle started bottom and escaped in 10 seconds to seal the deal.
After falling to Cornell Beachem (Mt. St. Joseph), Slagle's day was halted with a 6-4 loss to Vittorio Santillo (John Carroll).
184 -
Dylan Roth was tested in his first round matchup, facing off against Mount Union's George Lassnick. Roth led 3-1 after two periods and picked up a reversal in the third to push his lead to 5-1. A reversal and riding time point brought the final score to 5-4, but ended with Roth on top, advancing to the second round.
In the second round, Roth had a much easier time handling Arnold Fox (Millikin). Roth was able to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge his way to an 11-1 major decision.
For his final match on Friday, Roth made quick work of Luke Carver (Trine). Roth stuck Carver in 1:51.
197 -
Da'Veon Parker defeated Chase Gibson of Trine in the first round with a 4-2 decision. Parker got a takedown, an escape, and a stalling point to compile his four points for the win.
Parker was pinned by North Central's Ben Bergen in the second round, then beaten 15-5 by Joe Embleton (Messiah) in the consolation bracket.
285 -
Blake Jerome was upended by Justin Hennessy of Nebraska Wesleyan by a major decision, dropping him to the consolation bracket. There, he advanced by sticking Zak Hughey (Mt. St. Joseph) late in the first period.
Next, four near-fall points in the second period helped Blake ease past Chad Grimm (MacMurray), 8-5. His tournament run concluded with a loss to Owen Miller (Olivet).
