10 placers lead Berg to third overall team finish

ADA -- At the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday, the Heidelberg University wrestling team earned a third place team finish and had two individual champions, one runner-up and seven other placers on the day.

Among the 13-team field, Heidelberg had a total 149.5 points that was just 1.5 off of hosts ONU in second place. Division II opponent Tiffin University earned the team championship with 200 points even.

Heidelberg's placers included champions Hayden Bates and Dylan Roth, runner-up Mason Brainard, third place finishers Devin Miller and Jeremiah Slagle, fourth place men Slade Todd and Eric Adkins, seventh place finishers Jesse Goldufsky and Gabriel Martinez and eight place finisher Dwight Parker

"I am very proud of the team today," said head coach Tony Patrizi. "We started off a little rough this week at practice, but we turned it around with some good hard work toward the end of the week, and it showed today."

125:  No entrants.

133:  Mason Brainard cruised through to the championship bout via a major decision, tech fall, and a 10-5 decision. In the final against Trent Lashuay of Alma, Brainard was on the wrong end of a high-scoring bout that ended in favor of Lashuay by a final score of 23-15. Even with the loss, Brainard came way with second place overall in the weight class.

Iosef Nunez lost his first two of the day and finished 0-2.

141:   Much like Brainard, Hayden Bates smoothly made his way to the finals at 141. Bates entered the championship match 3-0 courtesy of a pin, a forfeit, and a 4-2 decision. Matched up against Division II opponent Dylan Mansor of Tiffin University, Bates won the individual championship by a major decision as a third period near-fall and a riding point pushed him over the top. Bates finished 4-0 on the day.

Jake Justice was upended in his first bout of the day, but stormed back to two straight first-period pins to advance through the consolations. In the end, Justice was dropped and finished the day 2-2.

149:  Slade Todd took fourth after an impressive display of wrestling got him in the third place bout. After winning four matches -- three by pin, and one by tech fall -- Todd was knocked to the consolation round where he fell and took fourth. On the day, Todd was 4-2.

Jesse Goldufsky and Dwight Parker each made it to the seventh place match where Goldufsky was tabbed the winner due to Parker hitting his limit on bouts for the day.

Goldufsky was 3-2 with two pins, while Parker was 4-2 with all four of his wins coming as pins.

Carson Pottenger had a successful day, but fell at a critical moment in the consolation rounds, finishing 3-2. His three wins came via a last-second pin and two decisions.

157:   Micah Mydloski, Tre Bogetich, and Joe Damm all finished 2-2, while Jacob Horsch was 1-2. Mydloski's two wins came courtesy of the pin.

165:  Devin Miller earned third overall as he advanced through a rigorous 165 weight class. His first win was a tech fall, but from there Miller worked hard to earn three decisions that won led to his third place finish. On the day, he was 4-1.

Dom Finch won his first bout as a 5-3 decision, but was knocked off twice and concluded his day 1-2.

174:  Jeremiah Slagle also took home third place with a 5-1 record on the day. Slagle won his first three matches with a forfeit and two tech fall decisions before falling into the consolation bracket where he used two one-point decisions to take third.

Braeden Kahl was 1-2 and Adam Medeiros was 0-2 in their bouts. Alex Westbrook was forced into a medical forfeit at his first bout and did not compete the rest of the day.

184:   Dylan Roth made quick work into yet another individual championship match with a tech fall and two speedy pins. Facing Antonio McCloud of Mt. St. Joseph in a blockbuster bout, Roth shutout the 2019 All-American at 197 and won via major decision 13-0. The individual championship is Roth's third of the season.

197:  Cory Stallings was the lone entrant at 197 and was out quickly after going 0-2.

285:  Eric Adkins put in a great day of work at 285. The freshman advanced the third-place bout where he fell and finished fourth overall. His four wins to push him to the bout all came as pins. In the end, Adkins finished with a 4-2 record.

Gabriel Martinez took home seventh place after he pinned Zach Saylor of Trine in his final match of the day. Martinez's final line featured a 4-2 record with two pins, a major, and a decision.

Blake Jerome finished 3-2 winning via medical forfeit, pin, and a narrow 5-4 decision.

Da'Veon Parker went 1-2, while Brandon DiPrima concluded his day 0-2.
